Rebecca Thompson is an iconic fashion designer in Melbourne, having dressed celebrities such as Chrissie Swan, Emma Freedman, Giaan Rooney and Paris Hilton. Since launching in 2000 she has become one of Australia’s premier luxury fashion labels, not to mention her new Rebecca Thompson e-boutique. This is now featuring in her latest collections offering a gorgeous mix of signature related separates, unique dressed for every season that is simply timeless and classic. In all her hard work she is one who took her own path and chose not to retail, as her label has been sold in boutiques for thirteen years with her own online shop.
Is it her vivacious, charismatic nature as described by others, or is it the fact that she describes herself as colourful, confident and happy person that makes her want to make her shopping collection a pleasurable and easy experience .
She got her first job as an agent, selling other people’s labels and working in production. She then moved into other various roles which helped her career progress and was inspired to start her own label through freelance design. This inspiration was from doing a lot of work in India which gave her a lot of knowledge, as her favourite places to visit she mentions is Sri Lanka. Her unique perception of what she loves in fashion is the craziness of the woman’s dresses she admires. They were a look of the eighties and maybe made up of the wrong prints, but put together she mentions is her inspiration for what she believes are beautiful. Is this where she gets her unique and magical character from, in embracing what stands out and ideas that she creates. A wow factor is definitely the way her designs comes across.
Rebecca Thompson is not only full of inspiration but also has lived to be inspired by her hard work and persistence to succeed. As there was a time when younger she sent out three hundred and fifty resumes for one week for jobs in fashion, this is a determined woman! Even at one time she felt out of her depth being compared to other students when undertaking courses in fashion, but as the years progressed she went on her own direction not concentrating on current trends. As her ideas and what she wanted to achieve through her customers was the importance of value for money and that her fashion can be worn in many ways. It also makes the job a lot easier when you enjoy what you are doing, as she loves having an idea and then converting it into a real piece as that is her most satisfying thing in her world. As her process is to look at fashion forecasts through to street level (what people are wearing) then she establishes the idea of how it can be converted to wearable pieces. With an incredible eye for detail, each of Rebecca Thompson piece embodies a relaxed boho glamour recognisable in any corner of the globe. Silk kaftans, bejewelled and sequined detailing and hand-embroided bold colours, make every day glamourous, where each distinct signature style will become an obvious wardrobe favourite. Timeless and classic, you will continue to reinvest in gorgeous Rebecca Thompson pieces to add to your collection. Stand out and make a statement or pair back your basics with stunning separates as magically her fashion statement is one to invest in.
In this time now she hopes she is in the same position but better, as she has had fantastic exposure and would love to go back selling internationally. As why wouldn’t she when Paris Hilton is wearing her stuff, as she loves the idea of her label and her name being known. When asked what her favourite designers were and why right now she loves Eastern Pearson what he did at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival. As not necessarily the brands that she loves but more of the concepts and designs that blow her mind. She also mentions the undiscovered designers in India who are designing big labels.
In her spare time you will find Rebecca Thompson in Melbourne as she describes as a pretty place, and loves the coffee here. She also mentions there’s nothing like time spent with her girlfriends for a nice dinner.
She is not only lives through inspiration from hard work and persistence, but believes that to be happy and successful a woman should believe in and love what you she does. As believes in getting rid of negatives from your life and embrace all that you love, and with a little bit of hard work you can get there!
